Over the years, I have taught a variety of Mathematics classes. This is my 26th year of teaching and my 20th year at E. A. Hall. I even went to school here, graduating in 1972.
This year, periods 1, 2, 5, & 6 are piloting a UCLA Algebra Readiness program for students in 8th grade who have not achieved proficiency in Math. This program has weekly consumable packets which include a variety of ways to teach basic skills to students who still haven't got it. Through games, group work, and visual examples, students do daily lessons and skill-builder activities for homework. Weekly quizzes test the new material for the week and review basic skills on a cyclical basis. After completing these packets, students will have the skills necessary to take the general math 8 CST test in May.
Period 3 is an 8th grade Algebra Class. Students in this class scored at the proficient or advanced level on their 7th grade CST tests and received teacher recommendation to be in this advanced class. Students are following the district curriculum guide for Algebra. At the end of the year, a test will be given to decide if the students have mastered the skills necessary to go into Geometry in high school or one period of Algebra in 9th grade.
