Foster the development of positive self-awareness and self esteem among students through culturally relevant enriching activities.
Develop youth leaders among participating students.
Promote active involvement and prevent/curtail violence amongst youth with providing sustainable alternative forms of expression.
Students will become empowered by contributing to the local and global community. Students will gain the social skills, knowledge and awareness of local issues needed to provide community service.
What is MEChA?
The purpose of MEChA de E.A. Hall is to respond to the social, political, cultural, and educational needs of the Chicano/a community and to promote and publicize these needs to the Watsonville Community at large. Founded in 1969 as a response to the discrimination of Chican@’s and in society, MEChA is now dedicated to fostering cultural awareness, political activism, educational outreach, and a bond of familia in Chican@ students.
What is "Chicano/a" ?
The word chicano/a is derived from MEXICA (Me-shi-ka), the name of the people that wondered from Aztlan to Tenochitlan. Meaning "people of the earth".
Chicanismo/a is the tie that binds all members of MEChA. Chicanismo/a is carnalismo/a, responsibility and commitment to all Chicano brothers and sisters throughout the university and community regardless of their socioeconomic status. Chicanismo/a further implies a respect for us as Chicano, for our history, our culture and our values. Therefore, the term Chicano/a is grounded in a philosophy not nationality. Chicano/a is a state of mind, not a birthright.
